A better parking routine
Before you leave the car
01 / Read the block
Check every applicable sign
Start with the side of the street where your car will sit. Read the days, hours, arrows, and vehicle restrictions together. A meter nearby does not cancel a loading restriction or a No Standing rule. Walk the block when the signs are unclear.
02 / Check the day
Separate cleaning from meters
Alternate Side Parking (ASP) is the street-cleaning schedule. A cleaning suspension does not automatically suspend meter payment or other restrictions. Check today’s official status before relying on a holiday calendar, especially after severe weather.
03 / Plan your return
Use the earliest deadline
Compare your planned departure with the meter’s maximum stay and the next posted restriction. Set a reminder before the earliest deadline. Paying for more time does not make it legal to stay through a restriction.
Common NYC parking questions
Can I stay after the street sweeper passes?
Keep the space clear for the entire posted ASP period, even if the sweeper has already passed. Check the official suspension status if you think that day’s cleaning rule is paused. DSNY street-cleaning guidance ↗
Does an ASP suspension mean all parking is free?
No. ASP, meters, and other restrictions are separate. Check the meter and applicable signs, and read the official notice for the specific date. NYC DOT suspension calendar ↗
What should I do if a street has no blue line?
The preview only draws block faces returned by the meter dataset. Unmetered streets, incomplete records, and a failed data request can all leave an area without lines. Check the physical signs; do not treat an empty map as permission to park.
Why might the map and the meter disagree?
Public datasets can lag changes on the street. Vehicle eligibility, rates, and time limits can differ between nearby blocks. Use the posted signs and meter instructions at your actual space, and consult NYC311’s meter guidance when you need help.
